The Best Hairspray.

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

elnett-hairsprayI have asked several hairstylists what hairspray they prefer because from time to time as a makeup artist I need hairspray. What do they all seem to prefer? Loreal’s Elnett hairspray. And, I’ll admit, after using it once or twice I realized exactly why everyone loves it so much - it is FANTASTIC. The hairspray holds your hair without leaving a sticky, unpleasant residue. Even better, one can lasts forever!

Star Trek, still in style

As Star Trek opens across theaters nationwide, fans are flocking to the movies to see whether or not creator Gene Roddenberry’s vision has been maintained.

Basing Star Trek on the theory that technology is good when used properly, Roddenberry’s futuristic technology was the inspiration for a variety of medical and technical devices used today including jet propulsion, cell phones and home computers.

It looks as if Roddenberry also had an eye on fashion trends. Often people associate Star Trek fashion with one piece spandex suits; however, after watching the original Star Trek episodes, we found some of spring’s trends on Star Trek’s women of the past, especially when it comes to hair.

Characters are seen with blunt bangs, headbands and flowers. Even a few alien lifeforms can be seen in floral prints.

To see more Star Trek fashion, check out your nearest movie theater, but only if you can make it through the crowds.

Urban Headbands

Feathered and flower headbands ready for Spring 2009

As spring emerges, headbands seem to be sticking around. Since January, shows have been previewing headbands of all varieties, but two styles are sticking out at Urban Outfitters: feathers and flowers.

The feather band is often seen decorated with a peacock feather, ranging from a thin band with some feathers hanging off, to a band that covers one side of the head.

The other trend includes bands that place a large object on the side of one’s head. Decorated with flowers or sometimes a knot, these headbands are usually worn horizontally around the forehead, but can be seen worn vertically as well.

What do you think? Would you wear one?

The Bigger The Hair, The Smaller The Hips

Wednesday, January 14th, 2009

I’ve been traveling across the U.S. for the past few days, and being that I am in South Carolina for the next week, an homage to voluminous sassy hair just seemed appropriate. Bumpits are plastic inserts that create an instant “bump” of volume. So for all of you ladies that have been wanting to recreate a fantastic beehive like Joan Halloway’s in a matter of minutes, these are definitely worth a gander.

Bumpits retail for $19.99 and are available in four shades (light blonde, dark blonde/light brown, brunette & black) and two sizes (regular and “hollywood”).

Erin Fetherston

The Erin Fetherston girl has grown up but she still likes to take inspiration from all things dreamy like tulle and clouds. Colors were taken from a sunset with puffy frocks in an ombre meld of periwinkle and pink. The stronger looks took their cue from the 1970s with one shoulder dresses, sheer bell bottoms and drawstring tunics. This new direction still had Fetherston’s signature touches like bows adorning the head, neck and waist. The gowns looked like they would float away if left on their own. Voluminous ruffles of sheer fabric were placed on less expectant places like the shoulders or gathered down the two side of the dress. The more wearable of the dream-like clothes came in the form of cocktail dresses — the swirly colors and random volume seemed more manageable when they hit the knee.

Lyndell Mansfield has worked with Erin from the beginning when creating the hair for her shows. She told us that the Spring 2009 look was about a girl who’s had more life experience but still lives in the clouds. High pony tails were meant to remind you of Barbie but this time they were polished and stronger. Hair was slicked back without a strand loose, with the help of extensions cut very bluntly. Make-up by Bobbi Brown also played up the contrast of a more mature look but still very fanciful. Eyes were strong and cheeks and lips were a soft nude. The fantasy came in the form of all shades of purple - from lilac to eggplant - which went to create the dark eyes and a metallic (almost glittery) shimmer which surrounded the outer eye and cheekbone. We hear Bobbi couldn’t make the actual show because of a dinner invite to Jon Bon Jovi’s house which¬†popped up last minute.

If you love vintage things as much as we do, you must check out this new book Vintage Hairstyling: Retro Styles with Modern Techniques. The author, Lauren Rennells, has a passion for hairstyles of the past. This book helps capture the looks from the 1930-50’s, and maps out each step clearly with how-to pictures. Our favorites are “The Jazz Singer,” “The Pin-Up,” and “Film Noir.”

Summer Hair SOS

Friday, June 27th, 2008

In the summer time, we’re out and about much more. With the slough of outdoor festivities, pool lounging and beach going, it’s important to remember that our hair might need some additional lovin’. I’ve asked two of Eliza’s favorite hair gurus and celebrity stylists Jeremy Clark and Ryan Randall to recommend some of their favorite hair-care products to keep summertime hair protected and gorgeous.

Jeremy’s Recommendations:
Rene Furterer Anti-Dehydrating Vegetal Spritz: “a very light styling spray that will protect the hair from heat, and keep the style in place lightly, and still allowing movement.”

Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo:”Hold the can about 15 inches away from the head and spray. This gives a style body, and absorbs any latent moisture… keeps a style looking good all day.”

Ryan’s Recommendations:
Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray: “A must for those with colored hair. Packed with sunscreen, it’s sure to lock in and extend the life of your color.”

TIGI Catwalk Camera Ready Shiner and Defrizzer: ‚ÄúA great pick me up for dull and dry hair‚Ķ A little goes a long way, so use sparingly, and enjoy the shine. Don’t you deserve silky, shiny, smells-so-good hair?! And with an amazing watermelon fragrance…it’s perfect for summer!!‚Äù¬†
