As a life-long curly haired girl, it’s always been a challenge to find products that work well with my hair. I remember the various things that I’ve attempted in the epic battle of Rachel vs. Curl. In 8th grade, I used to drench my hair in cheap gel and mousse to confirm my residence in the crunchy purgatory that many of us felt we were destined to in the mid-nineties. I also remember in the 9th grade with the assistance of my best friend, laying my head on the ironing board and having her iron my hair. My mother never understood why I just couldn’t be happy with my hair, my huge brunette mane.
With age, I have come to accept and adore my curls. Recently, a very talented hairstylist friend recommended that I try the DevaCurl line by DevaConcepts. DevaConcepts was created by Lorraine Massey, who also penned the curly-haired woman’s manifesto: Curly Girl. Now, considering that I’ve used and abused my hair for so long, I was skeptical. I’ve been using the system for a couple weeks now and my hair looks and feels fantastic. DevaCurl No-Poo and OneCondition are fantastic. Why is it called “No-Poo” you ask? It is a non-lathering cleanser for hair- filled with yummy botanical ingredients and an even yummier mint and Turkish rose fragrance. It cleanses hair without stripping it of essential moisture. OneCondition is No-Poo’s ultra creamy counterpart, a lemongrass scented conditioner that keeps curls manageable and glossy.
The DevaCurl line also contains great styling products and Low-Poo shampoo for wavy hair.
DevaCurl Low-Poo, No-Poo, OneConditoin, Arc Angell, Set It Free (starting at $18 each)
An added oomph of shine and manageability, I recommend Macadamia Natural Oil’s Healing Oil Treatment. It offers extreme moisturizing, frizz control and built-in UV protection. To use, just add a small amount to your conditioning treatment or directly on damp or dry hair. One pump is sufficient for medium length hair, so adjust accordingly based on your needs.
Do you love belts so much that you want to wear one on your head? You might not think you do, but this adorable accessory will make you wonder how you lived without it. Buy it at the ELIZA shop now.
This summer, I will be going on a mission trip to either Uganda or Panama depending on how much money I raise. (If I raise $3,000 I will go to Panama, if I raise $5,000 I will go to Uganda.) To jumpstart my fundraising, I have handmade all sorts of fashionable headbands and hair clips that are available for a price that is drastically cheaper than what you would pay for a similar product from any department store. Headbands are only $8 or two for $15; clips are $3 or two for $5. There are many colors, sizes and types of flowers available. You can get one from my personal blog: http://www.kendraleighw.wordpress.com or by contacting kendraleighw.blog@gmail.com

Most shampoos and conditioners strip your hair of natural oils, or weigh down your do with too many additives. That is why there has been the new trend of sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners. However, my girlfriends complain about not getting enough suds to really feel clean with most of the products in this catagory. White Sands Volumizing Shampoo and Conditioner holds up on all accounts. I have been using it all month, and it gets my hair clean, has lots of suds, and smells nice. What more could a girl ask for? Well, it’s also sulfate-free, vegan-friendly, and a better deal, at around $12 each bottle, then their competitors.
